6 unmissable festivals in the snow

Hit the Slopes

Don’t feel like waiting for the summer to hit up a great festival? More of a winter sports enthusiast? Wish you could go skiing or boarding to a thumping soundtrack? Well, to you guys we say one thing: stop wishing and just go! Whether you love skiing, boarding or simply just having a play around in the snow.

March and April have become firmly established as the snow festival season, with a wide range winning massive acclaim in the last few years. As Winter bursts into Spring, ski resorts across Europe attract festival-goers in their thousands. Here, we present some of the biggest parties in the snow planned for 2018.

Alpe d’Huez, France: 17th – 24th March 2018

Previously held in the mountains of Andorra, spring 2015 saw the Snowboxx festival move to the Alps in south-east France. Expect skiing, skating, boarding and (most importantly) chilling in one of many spas, alongside the promise of daily Champagne-fuelled parties at après-ski bar La Folie Douce.

Musical sets from Chase and Status and Fatboy Slim lead the overall line-up of popular European artists and DJs to keep you dancing through the small hours. Away from the music, a plethora of

activities taking place within the resort will ensure that no moment will go wasted during the seven-day event.

Horizon Festival, Arinsal, Andorra:  March 2018

Brought to you by veteran organisers of some of the best summer festivals in Eastern Europe, Horizon has moved from Bulgaria’s biggest ski resort to Andorra, after becoming increasingly popular over the years. You don’t have to be a pro skier to enjoy your time on the slopes; Arinsal features slopes of varying complexity to cater to novices and pros alike.

Over 80 DJs across a range of musical styles are set to fill unique venues, covering abandoned warehouse spaces, secret forest hideaways and even lazy poolsides.

The Brits
Tignes, France: 25th March – 6th April 2018

Since 1989, the Alpine resort of Tignes has hosted the British Championships for skiing and boarding. With the party atmosphere wriggling its way in over the years, professionals and amatuers have now showcase impressive displays on the slopes to a totally buzzing soundtrack.

Resident DJs Kommissar and Tony B will lead this year’s line up, which has yet to be announced. However, appearances in previous years from the likes of Chase & Status, Ben Howard and Pendulum keep us in good faith that this year’s après-ski bars will be hot enough to melt the snow.

Altitude Comedy Festival
Mayrhofen, Austria: December 2018

Snow festivals aren’t all just about the music. If a week of live stand-up from some top-notch comedians is more your thing, Altitude Comedy Festival is the place to go. Established by Andrew Maxwell and Marcus Brigstocke in 2008, Altitude has grown year on year to become “the funniest show on snow”.

After days of learning the slopes, relaxing rooftop spas and breathtaking black runs, the nights are filled with laughs throughout some of Mayrhofen’s biggest venues. Previous line ups have included Jimmy Carr, Al Murray, Eddie Izzard and John Bishop, alongside a troop of hidden gems from across the continent to keep the chuckles flowing.

Portes du Soleil, France & Switzerland: 18 – 24 March 2018

A massive variety of free daytime concerts are staged on the pistes of Portes du Soleil, which consists of 13 resorts spread across the French-Swiss border. From pop to rock, contemporary to traditional, there’s definitely something for everyone to enjoy whilst having fun on the slopes. The only pass needed is the one for the chair lift!

Rock the Pistes will make sure that the once calm and tranquil mountain tops will come alive daily with an avalance of sound. And if a day full of incredible live music isn’t enough, plenty of clubs will be bouncing through to the small hours.

Mayrhofen, Austria: 9-14 April 2018

Undoubtedly the best known ski festival on the continent, established bands, DJs and breakthrough artists flock to this Alpine resort year after year. The week-long festival delivers relaxing days on the slopes and energetic nights in some terrifically unique venues, from mountain-top igloo to an enchanted forest clearing.

Following after all the major snow festivals, Snowbombing offers one hell of a season closer as visitors get to experience the slopes in the spring sunshine against a stomping soundtrack. Heading up the event this year, acts like Rudimental, DJ Yoda, Skrillex and Basement Jaxx will surely make Snowbombing 2015 an unforgettable event.
