The perfect antidote to a sunshine overload, Pamplona is the perfect place to catch some shade with so many gorgeous Gothic churches and art museums to hang around in until sunset.

Visit Pamplona during the San Fermin Festival to witness Spain’s world famous running of the bulls. Each year between the 6th and 14th July, the town centre fills with over 1 million spectators. The route winds through the streets of Santo Domingo, Mercaderes, and Estafeta where onlookers watch the participants sprint along side enormous bulls. Festivities last for 9 days, during which time the Old Town is transformed into a centre of culture, cuisine and of course, partying!
The citadel of Pamplona was built in the 16th century and houses pavilions, moats and fortifications within its 280,000 square metres of grounds. The Ciudadela is considered to be one of the best examples of military architecture to come from the Spanish renaissance. Originally designed to defend the city, the citadel is now a vast urban park full of open-air exhibits and sporting facilities.
The Plaza del Castillo is Pamplona’s main square, located in the heart of the city. Taking pride of place in the Old Town, you’ll find a whole host of restaurants and bars with outdoor terraces so you can enjoy a drink in the sun. The square also hosts concerts, bars, military parades and religious festivals. Explore the 18th century arcades that lead you down narrow alleys to the Old Town’s various tourist attractions. Don’t forget to check out Pamplona Cathedral, Pamplona City Hall and the Plaza de Toros.
The Taconera gardens, just outside of the city walls, are one of the most tranquil spots in the city to relax. In 90,000 square metres of gardens, you’ll find various flora and fauna, sculptures and even a mini zoo home to deers, ducks, pheasants and peacocks. In total, 30 different species live in the garden – see how many you can spot from the viewpoint at the five arches. For a refreshment after your walk, the park benefits from the Viennese Cafe which serves a selection of tasty cakes and coffees.
Regular trains run to Pamplona from other Spanish cities including Madrid, Barcelona and Zaragoza. You can also get to Pamplona from many of these cities by bus or sometimes plane.
Getting Around:
You probably wont need to use public transport to visit most of the main sites in Pamplona. Most places in the old town and city centre are easily reachable on foot. During the summer months there are many events on the streets including the running of the bulls and dancing so walking is the best way not to miss these!
