Trip Style

If you love yourself an epic journey, The Road to Athens is for you. Travel through Central and Eastern Europe for 3 weeks, all the way from Prague to Athens by train in 3 weeks. Although it crams in a ton of sightseeing and nightlife, the pace is still leisurely – giving you plenty of time to explore. Top it all off with a healthy dose of chill time at the end of your journey. If that’s not enough, why not add our Greek Island hopping trip onto the end!

Trip Description

Travel the continent from top to bottom

On our 3 week Road to Athens adventure, you’ll explore Central and Eastern Europe, from the pretty pastels or Prague, to the stunning blue of the Aegean. Starting in Prague, travel all the way down to the Greek capital – and beyond if you choose! Experience a selection of Central and Eastern European destinations with this 22 day adventure – with plenty of time in each city to delve below the surface if you choose

Pick the Road to Athens up in Prague, where you’ll settle in for your adventure. Enjoy gorgeous Gothic scenery by day, and long pilsner-fuelled nights once the sun goes down. Next, head south to classical Vienna, the music capital of the continent, before making your way along the beautiful Danube to grand, bohemian Budapest – the heart of Central Europe, and the gateway to the East.

Enjoy this historic capital’s gracious architecture, spacious parks and awesome party scene. After one too many in the Ruin Bars, recuperate at one of the world famous spas, before heading to the station to catch your night train. Next, it’s your first taste of Eastern Europe – you’re heading on to Brasov, in the heart of Transylvania. This hidden gem is home to paprika-laden stews, pastel-perfect houses and – of course – Dracula’s place (also known as Bran Castle!). Leave Brasov and it’s just a quick hop over to the Romanian capital – Bucharest. Visit the crazy palace of the people, and spend a lazy day shopping in the old town.

Say goodnight to Romania – and wake up in Bulgaria! Enjoy the melting pot that this capital city brings – there’s everything from Turkish spice markets to Russian inspired churches. For your penultimate spot, you’ll hit up Thessaloniki, the sea-side Greek city that packs a punch – especially when it comes to food. Indulge yourself in incredible Greek seafood – but go easy on the Ouzo – you’ll want to save that for your last stop.

Finally, you’ll reach Athens. This ancient capital has a young heart that’s buzzing with energy. From Wonders of the World to amazing food to cracking street-art and even better beaches, Athens is a place which delivers something for everyone. Spend 3 nights chilling out by the sea before your trip comes to an end. Fly back from Athens to London, or head out to the Greek Islands to continue your Odyssey…

I recently used Euroventure to book a holiday through Europe. They were absolutely brilliant. Everything was taken care of, and I was able to pay it off in monthly installments. My itinerary was perfect, and it was altered to fit my wants and needs. The booklet they sent out with the tickets was amazing. I loved the personalisation, and the tips and information on each place I visited were well used. The hostels they chose were all really good, and in great locations. The transport organised was also good, and I had enough time in each city before moving on to the next. I only had one problem throughout my entire 7 week trip (one of my trains was delayed, so I missed the connecting train), and it was resolved swiftly and without any issues. I had an amazing time, and if I could do it all again, I wouldn't change a thing! I would definitely recommend Euroventure, and hopefully I'll get the chance to use them again.

We traveled for 7 nights through Berlin, Prague, Vienna and budapest. We had a lovely time. Euroventure were very helpful, prompt, reliable and professional. We received a personalised booklet for our trip with helpful information for each city and trip. I found this very helpful and thoughtful. The hostels we stayed in were mostly very nice and located close to metro lines for traveling the cities. I would highly recommend them as a travel operator.

Questions & Answers

Don't see the answer you're looking for?

Question:
Are flights included in the price?
Answer:
International flights aren’t included however we are happy to help you with advice on what flights to book. All domestic flights are included.
Question:
Can I go on a Euroventure if I am under 18?
Answer:
Yes, generally you can go on a Euroventure if you or some of your group is under 18, however you must inform us before you book if this is the case. Our partner hostels and hotels have different rulings regarding under 18s, for example some do not allow minors to share dorms with strangers (meaning you’d need to go in a private room with your group, and pay the extra cost), and some don’t allow minors at all, meaning we have to use an alternative hostel. Others are fine to have under 18s as long as they carry a note of permission from a legal guardian. If you’re in any doubt, just ask us for a quote and we’ll let you know if it’s fine for you to travel with us ?
Question:
Do I travel as a group or with somebody from Euroventure?
Answer:
With our independent Interrai packages, you’ll travel on your own or in your own group of friends. We don’t add other customers to your trip and you won’t have a guide with you. That’s not to say you won’t meet people – travelling in hostels you’re bound to meet loads of cool people, but by travelling with us you’re free to do that at your own pace. Euroventure trips are all about independence – you just follow the itinerary and do your own thing, knowing that we’re only a phone call away if you run into difficulty. If you'd prefer to travel with a group, we also run group tours in Europe and Asia. For these trips, you'll travel with a group of likeminded backpackers and at least one guide from Euroventure. With these tours, we'll travel in a group and stay together in hostels, however in each location you will have some free time to explore independently.
Question:
What are the night trains like?
Answer:
The night trains are a great way to save time by travelling overnight in a comfortable environment. As far as availability allows, we try to get our customers into individual bunk beds in mixed lockable compartments of 6 people, with bedding included. If you want to travel in single-sex compartments or with fewer people this can be arranged as well at an extra cost. There are toilets located at one or both ends of the carriage and there is a guard that will supervise the corridor, check your tickets and let you know when you’re arriving. Sometimes the guards will take your passport and ticket off you when you get on – don’t panic – this is a safety precaution and they’ll always get them back to you in the morning.
