Trip Style

If you want to see the Northern Lights on a budget (and in style), there’s no better way to do it than by rail. You’ll go to sleep among Stockholm’s dreaming spires, and wake up in the stunning wilderness of Abisko. This is the trip for you if you love the outdoors, aren’t afraid of the Polar Night and dream of ticking the Aurora borealis off your bucket list.

Trip Description

See the Northern Lights… Stay in a hotel made of Ice… this is bucket list territory!

Our Lapland Adventure is the ultimate winter escape. This once in a lifetime adventure allows you to experience the stunning scenery of northern Sweden, watch the Northern Lights from a mountain hideout, stay in Kiruna’s world famous IceHotel and explore the heart of Lapland.

Start off your Lapland trip in Stockholm, the jewel in Sweden’s crown. Try some traditional Swedish Meatballs or wander round the impressive Christmas Markets, before embarking on your Northern adventure. In winter, hop on board your cozy sleeper train  and admire the serene, snowy views, before waking up in twilight in Abisko.

Abisko is a haven for winter adventures. This tiny village nestled among mountains and lakes plays host to the Aurora Sky Station, widely said to be the best place in the world to see the Northern Lights due its minimal light and noise pollution. Take a 20 minute cable car and admire the serene beauty of Abisko national park as it unfolds before you, before reaching your mountain lodge accommodation. This very special trip w voted Lonely Planet’s ‘Most Illuminating Experience of 2015’, and promises to be a truly magical way to spend the night.

Next, travel along the Swedish/Norwegian border, to Kiruna – gateway to the Arctic Circle and home to the famous IceHotel. Pick the hotel option and we’ll organise your transfer, so you can enjoy a cozy IceHotel warm room, or upgrade to a cold room for a night if you’re brave! Experience dog sledding or horse riding, take a wildlife safari, come face to face with Lapland’s Reindeers or learn about traditional Sami culture on one of our Lapland Excursions based at the IceHotel.

If you’ve not had enough of Lapland yet, head on into Norway, and the town of Narvik, where you can experience one of the most beautiful train rides in Europe, finishing your journey among the Fjords of the North West coast of Scandinavia.

The Route

Itinerary

This is a short trip offering 3 awesome Scandinavian destinations with plenty of time to see the sights. Journeys are short with the exception of the night train from Stockholm to Abisko which is an overnight train. Don’t worry though – we’ll always ensure that you arrive in good time to make the most of each city.

Stockholm Sweden

Stockholm (1 Night)

Stockholm has been described as the most beautiful city in Europe with its calm waterways, colourful buildings and cobbled streets. The Swedes are known for their sleek design, polite manners and propensity to have fun. Forget the meatballs, Stockholm has much more.

  • Wander up the cobbled streets of the old town
  • Admire the colourful skyline from a boat tour
  • Visit the ABBA museum

Abisko (1 Night)

Abisko is often said to be the best place in the world to see the Northern lights. A national park filled with  lakes, mountains and hardly a streetlamp in sight, it’s the perfect destination for an arctic tour. Take a cable car ride up the mountain to see the famous Aurora Borealis, which occur more often here than almost anywhere.

How to get there

The quickest way to get to Stockholm and home from Kiruna (via Stockholm) will be to book a budget flight each way. Check SkyScanner or Kayak for prices. You could also start off by taking the train to Stockholm via Amsterdam and Copenhagen, so just ask us about adding this on.

I was so happy that I decided to choose Euroventure to help me organize my interrailing experience. All of the guys working on my account were helpful and readily contactable if there were any issues! Thanks to my customized booklet, I knew exactly where to go in each of my stops and how to get there in the easiest way possible. I have already recommended Euroventure to many of my friends and intend to organize many trips with them again in the near future! Thanks to all of my Euroventure team! Michelle x

My friend and I have just returned from our interrailing trip which we organised through euroventure, and I could not recommend them enough!!!! They were able to help us plan our trip, whilst accommodating to our needs (whether that was having private hostels, allowing us to find our own accommodation in some places and book just the trains for us, find the cheapest travel routes, etc.). All of our hostels were nice and in good locations, which without them we aren't sure where we would have ended up! The book we received before our trip also ensured we knew exactly where to go to find them once getting off at the train/bus stations. The team were constantly available whilst sorting our trip, and were quick to respond to any queries or concerns that we had. They also were happy to recommend places to go whilst we were there. I would recommend using euroventure to anyone who is thinking about going interrailing. They were 100% worth it, and put me and my friend at ease throughout our travels, knowing that they had sorted everything.

Questions & Answers

Don't see the answer you're looking for?

Question:
Are transfers to Europe included?
Answer:
Our packages do not include flights to the start and from the end of the trip. We have plenty of trips however that do include Eurostar trains from London, and with most of these you are able to start from any mainland UK train station at no extra cost, as well as return there at the end of your trip. We just need to take into account the amount of time it takes you to travel from your UK home station to London to catch the Eurostar to Paris or Brussels, and your onward connections if necessary.
Question:
What are the night trains like?
Answer:
The night trains are a great way to save time by travelling overnight in a comfortable environment. As far as availability allows, we try to get our customers into individual bunk beds in mixed lockable compartments of 6 people, with bedding included. If you want to travel in single-sex compartments or with fewer people this can be arranged as well at an extra cost. There are toilets located at one or both ends of the carriage and there is a guard that will supervise the corridor, check your tickets and let you know when you’re arriving. Sometimes the guards will take your passport and ticket off you when you get on – don’t panic – this is a safety precaution and they’ll always get them back to you in the morning.
Question:
When do I pay?
Answer:
Once you’ve confirmed your package with our team via email or by phone, you need to pay a non-refundable £50 deposit per person to reserve a package. You then need to make full payment at least 90 days before the start of the trip. We can also arrange a set of instalments if you are coordinating a lot of people to pay.
Question:
When do I receive my tickets?
Answer:
Once we receive your final payment we will get to work on purchasing your train tickets which don’t become available as early as the accommodation. In some cases, we can’t get hold of tickets until four weeks in advance, so we normally say you should expect your travel pack around 2-4 weeks before you depart.
