Trip Description

The perfect trip for anyone wanting to explore the unique and lesser-visited side of Europe.

The Iron Curtain is one of our most popular interrailing packages, and it’s easy to see why. Whipping around 4 of Europe’s incredible but lesser-visited big cities, this is the perfect introduction to Eastern Europe. You’ll have enough time to experience its unique cultural melting pot, delicious food and buzzing nightlife. If you fancy travelling for more than a week, though, let us know and we’ll maximise your travel time! We reckon you can never spend too long in one place…

Start your trip off by crossing Checkpoint Charlie from West to East Berlin. As you head through the city’s bustling streets, you’ll wander along what was once the dividing line between Eastern and Western Europe before the collapse of the Berlin Wall. Balance out your historical walking tours with a taster of the city’s famously alternative nightlife. Filled with everything from edgy clubs to truly bizarre bars, you won’t be disappointed. If you’re lucky, you might even get into Berghain!

You’ll then make your way from Germany to pretty Prague, the capital of the old Czechoslovakia. Soak up the fairy-tale atmosphere with the delicious rounds of cheap local beer and jaunts in quirky cocktail bars. Recover from the night before just in time to leave for Vienna, the music capital! Experience the city’s sophistication, old-worldy cafe culture and impressive architecture before sampling its local beers.

Continue eastward along the picturesque Danube, to finally reach Budapest, the alternative little sister to Berlin. Take in its stunning structures, friendly locals, and cool ruin bars – there’s no place like it! Be sure to get the locals to tip you off about Budapest’s famous spas to take a quick dip to soothe that hangover. You’re going to need the relaxation before rounding your last night off with a toast of the local wine, Tokaji…

This is the perfect trip for anyone wanting to explore the unique and lesser-visited side of Europe. Does it sound like this quick getaway is up your street? Just let us know and we’ll get a quote sent over to you!

The Route

Itinerary

This is a fast-paced trip offering a great combination of Central European cities. Journeys are mid-length, usually around 3-4 hours each, but we’ll always ensure that you arrive in good time to make the most of each city. Wind your way down the Iron Curtain with these ex-soviet gems.

Berlin (2 Nights)

Berlin is the alternative, cool kid of Europe and a pro at being edgy. It’s how people dress, their liberal attitudes, the graffiti, the skaters and BMXers, the art, the clubs and the food. Berlin is also crammed full of fascinating WWII history around every corner.

Berlin Guides
Highlights

  • See a section of the old Berlin Wall
  • Climb the dome of the renovated Reichstag
  • Discover the nightlife of Schoneberg and Kreuzberg

Prague (2 Nights)

Prague is stunning, there’s no better word to describe it. On any side street or square you’ll find unique buildings full of colourful detail. The Czech Republic is also the home of Pilsner beer, with no lack of establishments to sample it.

Prague Guides
Highlights

  • Cross the enchanting Charles Bridge
  • Marvel at the curvy design of the dancing building
  • Try all the Czech Pilsner beers in the old town pub

Vienna (1 Night)

Vienna is crisp, clean and chic with its biggest draw factor being the multitude of classical palaces and grand imperial buildings. Whether you’re into your royal history or not, the sheer scale of it here will be encapsulating for all, whilst not forgetting the great bars and eateries.

Vienna Guides
Highlights

  • Visit the Spanish riding school of Vienna
  • Eat real Apple Strudel and Wiener Schnitzel
  • Go to a classical concert in a city renowned for music

Budapest (2 Nights)

Proudly guarding the Danube, the once twin cities of Buda and Pest show off every architectural style from Baroque to Art Nouveau. With its rickety trams and turn-of-the-century feel you’ll be charmed by its past while you cure your hangover at the multitude of hot baths.

Budapest Guides
Highlights

  • Relax in the 15th Century thermal spas
  • Take panoramic photos from the scenic Buda castle
  • Go to Sziget rock and indie festival in August

How to get there

The quickest and cheapest way to get to and from the UK will be to book a budget flight. Use a search engine such as Kayak or Skyscanner to do this. Alternatively, if you want to travel from the UK to Berlin and back from Budapest by train just get in touch and we can arrange this.

Fabulous trip around Europe. Very well planned out with plenty of extra information. The hotels they chose were brilliant value for money and all in easy and close locations. Anyone planning a rail trip we would thoroughly recommend Euroventure.

I took my granddaughter around Europe using euroventure to book everything. They were amazing from train reservations to hostels it all went to plan. We even prebooked tickets for attractions with Bogi our euroventure contact. From Paris to Rome to the hot baths in Budapest, castles in Prague and shopping in Berlin. Who knew there was still C &A on the high st! We ended in Amsterdam tired but fulfilled. euroventure took all the guesswork and worry although travelling independently you knew they were always a phone call away if needed. I loved it so much I’m going to do it all again very soon. Ty Euroventure for the trip of a lifetime.

We had an amazing time on our trip! I am so grateful for the assistance I received from Richard and Bogi. They helped me put together the perfect trip. I had only a short time, but was able to visit all the places I wanted to. All train tickets and reservations were in order and everything went smoothly. I was traveling with my daughter, so I opted to stay in hotels. They were in good locations, nice and clean. We also received a package before our trip with all tickets, hotel reservations and useful tips for places to visit, foods to try, how to say certain phrases in each country we visited, etc. - it was very helpful! Overall, we are so happy we booked with Euroventure! They made it all very easy. We will definitely book with them again soon...

Highly recommend Euroventure to any traveller, as a first time traveller, Euroventure made the whole process hassle and stress free from start to end! I can’t thank our tour leader, Tom enough, as if it wasn’t for him I’d still be lost! He was very organised, as well as having a laugh with us! I’ll definitely be recommending to a friend!

Questions & Answers

Don't see the answer you're looking for?

Question:
Are transfers to Europe included?
Answer:
Our packages do not include flights to the start and from the end of the trip. We have plenty of trips however that do include Eurostar trains from London, and with most of these you are able to start from any mainland UK train station at no extra cost, as well as return there at the end of your trip. We just need to take into account the amount of time it takes you to travel from your UK home station to London to catch the Eurostar to Paris or Brussels, and your onward connections if necessary.
Question:
Can I go on a Euroventure if I am under 18?
Answer:
Yes, generally you can go on a Euroventure if you or some of your group is under 18, however you must inform us before you book if this is the case. Our partner hostels and hotels have different rulings regarding under 18s, for example some do not allow minors to share dorms with strangers (meaning you’d need to go in a private room with your group, and pay the extra cost), and some don’t allow minors at all, meaning we have to use an alternative hostel. Others are fine to have under 18s as long as they carry a note of permission from a legal guardian. If you’re in any doubt, just ask us for a quote and we’ll let you know if it’s fine for you to travel with us ?
Question:
When do I receive my tickets?
Answer:
Once we receive your final payment we will get to work on purchasing your train tickets which don’t become available as early as the accommodation. In some cases, we can’t get hold of tickets until four weeks in advance, so we normally say you should expect your travel pack around 2-4 weeks before you depart.
